I know it’s Friday, for many just a day, for others an incredible holy day. A time of sorrow, for some a time of joy. For non-believers a time when history just continued to move on, another rebel on the cross, an insignificant killing by the Romans like so many of the thousands before, hardly noteworthy except by a couple contemporary historians and that only in passing. There are some who argue it wasn’t really Friday, but that’s a different discussion.
A guy hung on a cross, and true as the Chief Priest had hoped, His followers scattered like bugs under a rug. Now we can get on with the status quo, keep the Romans happy and out of our way. Now, time to get someone busy fixing the veil to the Holiest of Holies that got torn in the earthquake, what a bummer that was. We’ll get going on that after the Sabbath, …where’s that duct tape….
And His followers, champions all of them. Peter, pretty much swore by Heaven and earth that he’d never forsake Him and all the others nodded in agreement. So tonight they’ll be hiding in a cubby somewhere, nearly peeing themselves at every sound of a foot step. They’re next on the hit list, hanging out with this guy for the last three years. What are they going to do now, their livelihood is gone, they’ve been riding His coat tails this long. They could never face their old friends. What to do….
And in another totally different realm, unseen to human eyes there’s dancing and celebration. Lot’s of high fives going around. We’ve taken care of Him, we won, strength in numbers and boy do we have the numbers. He thought He could win, this is our world, He gave it to us to do what ever and now because He lost we have a lot of fun ahead….
Lost in all this is the fact that He, knowing man, gave Himself up, willingly. He knew, from the beginning of time that man would need help, that there would need to be a sifting and that only those wholly devoted would be able to enter into His father’s presence, with His help. When man transgressed the law only the purest of sacrifices would suffice. Since man could not accomplish it, He offered the purest of sacrifices to cover all offenses, Himself. With this one selfless giving, He gave the gift that keeps on giving.
Jesus came, He taught and refreshed, He gave Himself up as a sacrifice for our imperfection, defeated sin and death on the third day by rising from the grave. And He left us with a gift and a promise. All we have to do is accept that gift, and give ourselves to Him who has promised to redeem us, protect us and return to bring us home to Him. If you’ve never accepted Jesus, look deeply into yourself, understand the sin that drives you and release it to Jesus and accept His gift to you. If you think you’ve taken that step and walked away leaving that gift on the doorstep, come back to Him, look around at this world as it’s falling apart signaling His impending return, come back to Him, time is short. It’s Friday………but Sunday’s a comin…
