What’s to be Thankful For?

Tomorrow, here in the States, we celebrate Thanksgiving. All the contemporary attributes will be there, Macy’s parade, the Detroit and Dallas football games respectively, families across America traveling to family gatherings with all the fixin’s, turkey, stuffing sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. Life is still good in America, they’ve re-elected their hope president.

Many still have their jobs and provide for their families, their mortgage payments are met, the car payments keep going, there is food on the table. Somehow, and I believe because of, these attributes were enough for America to look at what’s in front of them and ignore the future, and as such re-elect Barack Obama. The world isn’t falling apart, America is still as strong as ever if you have a need step up to the government counter top and get a handout, worship the beast and get rewarded. Latest figures show that 47% of Americans are on the government take and even more non-Americans, and the beast has long tentacles. Who’s footing this bill, and what of those fallen through the cracks? What happens when austerity measures begin in the US?

Some, tomorrow, may be heating some Ramen noodles and maybe a can of tuna, some currently dispossessed by Hurricane Sandy and without power, still voted for obama, and he will pull them through. Things look good for those that can’t see past the beast, and his provision, a term I use loosely. So what is this Thanksgiving all about, in fact, what is Thanksgiving about in general?

Remember the true meaning of thanksgiving

Centuries ago a people came to these shores to pursue a freedom to worship God. They came, not knowing the future but putting that into the hands of God. They trusted God for their provision, for their safety, for their homestead. There were no government hand outs, no food stamps, nobody paying their heating bill. They worked, tilled, befriended the locals instead of killing them. After a long winter living offshore on ship and a spring and summer of planting and growing, God blessed and the harvest came in, enough, more than enough to share and enjoy with the locals. That thanksgiving was to celebrate God, the Creator of the Universe, Jehovah Jirah the provider, and His provision for them.

Those same kind of times are perilously close again. Where God’s provision and trust in His sovereignty will be all we have left. No government will be there helping without qualification. No government will be there when the chips are really down. The time is coming and is here when no government intervention  can help in the ultimate need. And that is the need for Christ. It all boils down to you and God. There’s a lot of talk in Washington, and it changes day to day as they check the list of who’s turn it is to take a fall. Lot’s of help there. But God is sovereign, unchangeable, he has only one requirement, He has spoken and still speaks the same thing. The time of judgement is coming and none can escape it.

He has given us the ultimate saving grace from all this. Grace, unmerited favor, something we can’t earn. But He gives it freely to those who will turn from this world, repent , and accept His free gift, salvation through Jesus the Christ, His only son. So, tomorrow, when we break bread, or Ramen noodles, We do have something to be thankful for. Someone who really cares, so much so that He gave His only Son, who died for our sins so that we can stay in fellowship with Him for eternity.

I'm a musician and worship leader, intent on following wherever God leads and directs me, with His leading's in the Spirit and others bonking me on the head ( hopefully not much of the latter). My life experiences are in blue collar and white collar (engineering) employment, political office, lay ministries, national competition in track and cross country and most importantly marriage and raising a family. God has given me a unique set of skills and character to serve Him and a passion for doing it.

  1. This morning I shed a few tears as I thought about how thankful I am for Jesus Christ. I wondered at it, and asked “why us Lord?” Why did you do this for mankind, who are we? I am thankful for a good God, a loving and merciful God… one we don’t deserve…
