When Open Doors Seem Closed

You’ve been praying about this, everything seems to be going in that direction. Hints, people saying things, it’s obvious, an open door and you’re ready to take action. Then, WHAM, the door seems to slam shut.joey

“Whoa, wait a minute. God what’s up? I’ve been following you.”

SILENCE.

But God what about your Word in Revelation 3:7-8?

SILENCE.

Didn’t you say you would open a door that no man can shut?

SILENCE.

But I’m a man of little strength, I need you.”

I will take My rest,
And I will look from My dwelling place
Like clear heat in sunshine,
Like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.Isaiah 18:4

REST???”

Seeking and following God’s will can sometimes be frustrating and agonizing while we attempt to do it in our own strength. God’s ways are not our ways. In our fast food society we expect things, now. We’ve done parts A,B,C, subsection 2(a)(ii) and D and, yes, we can see the goal line. Expecting our reward, everything just stops. Why?

Patience, little grasshopper.

We look at things from our little microcosm as if it’s the big picture. If you are trusting God, and it’s to be His miracle, for His glory, then His picture is a whole lot bigger than yours. Sometimes, okay many times, you do what He wants you to do and then sit and wait. Why? In God’s economy there’s a whole lot going on. Personal events, world events, heart events are happening all around you that need to be done before “your” event for His glory. Many, many more people and events will be impacted by the exhibition of His Grace and power than just you. So, is the door closed? Or are our eyes, for a while, shielded from the obvious?

Satan can’t stop Jesus, he can try to get in the way but that’s short-lived. Isaiah 22:22 says of Jesus,

I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.

But, then, God  allows these trials, disappointments and times of despair to try us, season us, train us for the warfare He intends. Everything that happens to us is part of the training and battle against Satan, the father of iniquity and lies. God’s intent is that we learn how to use His power that He has given against the foe.  Matthew 16:19 says,

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

After time we know this and we push and push our way in the battle against him. But often, very often, God tells us to stop, wait , (be still), then at the appropriate time  pull the already unlocked door open. God is not slow to act, we just think He is.

Do your open doors look closed? Have you gotten mad at God because things aren’t going your way? Is God not listening to you? How about listening to God, repent of your griping and listen for His still small voice over the noise. He is waiting for you….

I'm a musician and worship leader, intent on following wherever God leads and directs me, with His leading's in the Spirit and others bonking me on the head ( hopefully not much of the latter). My life experiences are in blue collar and white collar (engineering) employment, political office, lay ministries, national competition in track and cross country and most importantly marriage and raising a family. God has given me a unique set of skills and character to serve Him and a passion for doing it.

  1. Hi brother,

When this situation hits me, I just return to the promise He gave me one morning after struggling and wondering why He was very silent. It was last year that for almost a month I could hear nothing from Him so I truly panicked. On August 29 I insisted that the Lord speak and resolved not to sleep until I was assured He heard me. I could feel peace so I slept at almost midnight.

At 5:00 o’ clock the following morning He woke me up whispering in my ear “Isaiah 58:11.” Hurriedly I got up and read my Bible and here is the message:

“The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”

Today, when the Lord is quiet I simply rest my heart and believe that He is with me always. Even in those quiet moments the Lord is working in us and through us as His words says, “The Lord will guide you always…”

    Love in Yeshua,

    Cynthia
